OFF TO CANNES: GLUE SOCIETY TEAM WINS FAIRFAX YOUNG CREATIVE COMPETITION

Winners of the Fairfax Young Creative Competition 2006 are Pete Baker and James Harvey from The Glue Society, Sydney.
“This year has been the most successful year with 97 entries received,” said Zac Skulander, Creative Executive from Fairfax. “We invited judges, whom we are sending to Cannes, and feel there was no better group of top creative and media people to judge this competition than those that will be looking at the best creative work from around the world.”
The brief for this year’s competition was to ‘create Australia’s biggest print advertisement – the Super Panorama.’
The winning entry showed a Super Panorama for Yahoo Personals, titled ‘Romance’.
“This is probably the most important award for young creatives in Australia to achieve,” says Skulander. "Peter and James will now represent Australia in the Young Creative competition in Cannes where they will be pitted against other young creatives. They will travel in June to the Cannes Lions 2006 International Advertising Festival.
The Australian judges who decided the winners included James McGrath, George Patterson Y&R, Melbourne; Warren Brown, BMF; Gary Hardwick, IKON; Scott Whybin, Whybin TBWA; Glen Condie, Maverick Communications; Dave King, M&C Saatchi; Matt Cumming, M&C Saatchi; Michael Lynch, Campaign Brief; and Zac Skulander and Elizabeth Ross representing Fairfax.
The judges are pictured above.

What the fuck's the idea?

Come on, I've got an agency full of juniors who worked like fuck on this brief.

Show the ads.

hmmmmmm conspiracy theory. why are we not seeing the finalists. maybe because they are WAY better than the winner. which most of us agree has no idea behind it and makes no use of the sheer scale of the medium and does not take on board the 'interactive' element that was in the brief. they have taken an A3 press ad and got studio to make it bigger. genious.

4:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

genuis. sorry. my writer didnt spell check my comment.

Well done guys. Not only are you two of the nicest people in this business, but you're also obviously up there as most talented. I couldn't think of a team that deserves this more than you do. CONGRATULATIONS! Enjoy every moment and ignore the bitter, "crab net' syndrome. Especially the genius who can't spell genius. Truly horrifying how many people in this game are illiterate, and how reliant people are on spell check. Lynchy we need this blog to have spell check software added so Sydney Suit doesn't have any more ammunition than she already has.

5:21 PM

Yeah 4:53, spell check your fucking work you fucking fuck fuck.

Hmmmmmm is actually spelled Hmmmmm.

Moron.

Fuck.

Now, I can't quite make out the idea cos it's small on my screen, but I think I get it.

And it's a GREAT idea. And interactive.

That's assuming it's the idea I think it is. If it's not then I'm the genius.

My mum thinks so.

Firstly, well done to the winners. With 90 entries, I'm sure the standard was high. Good luck in the world champs at Cannes. Be the first Aussie winners over there. I think the best we've done so far is runner-up.

Secondly, as Jenny Mak's temporary teammate for the competition, I know for a fact that the above posts were not made by either of us. Thanks for the appreciation, but the judges get the final say and with judges of this calibre, I'm sure the process wasn't 'rigged'.

See you next year.

Didn't a well known creative team win this comp a few years back only to be disqualified because one of them wasn't Australian?
How then can a Pommy team win this year?

3:48 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

That well known creative should never have been disqualified in the first place. If someone lives and works in Australia, they should be allowed to compete for Australia. They can't compete for anyone else, so why should Australia stop them from competing as well. All you're doing is robbing these young teams a chance to excel in this industry. Please don't let this happen again.

Last time I checked, the advertising industry in Australia is filled with people from all over the world. It would be a shame to not count the young ones as our own because they're pretty freakin talented

Firstly, I want to say congratulations to Pete and James. I loved your entry AND it's interactivity.. (despite some ignorant comment about how it had none). I don't know anyone who works harder Pete, who deserves this more!

On a slightly less positive note, i'd like to add that some of the people on this Campaign Brief blog need to get a life. As a junior starting out in this industry.. slugging it out at work and AWARD school.. after reading this blog I wonder if i'm doing the right thing or simply wasting my time. Most of you people (and i'm talking about the terribly ungracious ones) really do give advertising a bad name.
I'd really like to see if half of you have the balls to post those comments if you weren't anonymous. I think not.

STOP BLOG: Pete has been a permanent resident for two years. James was born here and has lived here his whole life. Hence, they both qualify according to the rules. Good luck boys, be the first Aussie team to win the Young Creative competition in Cannes.

10:36 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

That may be so but what about the other finalists? To see the standard of work etc. and the so called 'great palace' work.

I can't believe the amount of shit this young team is copping for WINNING the bloody comp.
As a previous two time winner (well...once disqualified) i hope these boys achieve what none of us have been able to do.
Well done and good luck boys.

Congratulations guys. Well deserved and a great entry. Shame about the negativity at the start of this blog. Possibly due to not being able to view your entry at a decent size. Even still, thats no excuse.
Sincere bests wishes for Cannes - Campaign Palace Creative

The scam is that you all buy into it aswell, "Yeah you young fuckers should do it...because back in my day..."

Congrats Pete and James. Talented and nice such a refreshing change from the arsehole hacks who seem to earn a living around the place.

Isn't Peter Hibberd that wack job who thinks he's on a mission from god?

8:59 PM

No, that was Mother Theresa.
Hibberd's the doctor from the Simpsons.

Hopefully he has a bit more luck with bothering god,
because it looks like he didn't bother the judges in this competition.

Yes Lynchy please blow the ads up a little.
